NEW LONDON, Conn.-The Coast Guard tennis team picked up four straight set singles matches and won two of three doubles matches as the Bears defeated Springfield by a count of 7-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match on Wednesday afternoon in New London.
Sophomores Robert Renfrow (#1 - 7-5, 6-0), Mark Guentert (#2 - 6-4, 6-3), Weston Fortna (#3 - 6-2, 7-6 (5)), and junior Alex Mead (#5 - 6-2, 6-1) all earned straight set victories on the singles side for Coast Guard while sophomore Townsend Hirst (#6 - 6-4, 4-6, 10-5) also posted a singles victory for the Bears.
On the doubles side the pairings of Guentert and Fortna (#1 - 8-4) as well as Renfrow and Mead (#2 - 8-3) each picked up victories as well.
With the victory Coast Guard is now 3-6 (1-1 NEWMAC) on the season while Springfield drops to 5-4 (1-1 NEWMAC) with the loss. The Bears will be back in action on Saturday, April 5th when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on MIT at 1:00 pm.
