Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior Matt Furman scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute as No. 25 Eastern Connecticut remained unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game between the two Connecticut schools.
The Warriors improved to 13-0-1 on the year while Coast Guard saw its seven-game unbeaten streak snapped as the Bears dropped to 9-4-1 on the season.
There was some controversy surrounding the only goal of the game as Furman, appeared to be off sides. The Coast Guard defense and sophomore goaltender Richie Burns letup anticipating the off sides call, but it never came and Furman scored the goal with sophomore Nicholas Demo adding the assist in the 14th minute. It was Furman's team-leading 12th goal of the season and the only shot for the Warriors in the first half.
Coast Guard had its best opportunity in the opening half when junior Matt Epperly hit the crossbar from 25 yards out in the 24th minute.
Eastern Connecticut senior goalkeeper Jordan Munsell made a sprawling save off a shot by freshman Alexander Lane with 1:30 left in the first half as the Warriors took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
Coast Guard outshot Eastern 8-1 in the opening half and 13-5 for the game.
Eastern had the first chance in the second half and again it was Furman, but this time Burns made a sliding save just over 11 minutes into the second half.
Coast Guard junior John Rendon almost tied the game in the 62nd minute when classmate Joe Bodzewski's shot ricocheted off Rendon, but Munsell made the stop at the post.
The Bears had a pair of late opportunities late in the game, but Epperly misfired, sending his shot over the goal, from eight yards out with 12:15 left, and freshman Lukas Benedetto blasted a shot high-and-wide from six yards away with seven minutes left.
Munsell (13-0) made seven saves to record his seventh shutout of the season while Burns (9-2-1) had two saves for the Bears.
Coast Guard is back in action in a key New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at MIT on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bears can win their first ever NEWMAC regular season championship with a win at MIT on Saturday and a win at Babson on Oct. 27th.
