Dr. Rose begins his 29th year at the Coast Guard Academy. He was named the Director of Athletics on Dec. 12, 2019.

Dan spent his first 15 years as the head coach of both the men’s and women’s track teams at the Coast Guard Academy.  Rose was the 2006 NEWMAC conference Coach of the Year and in 2008 he was named the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association Outdoor Track Coach of the Year for the New England Region.

During his tenure, the men’s and women’s teams produced a combined 16 Division III All-Americans and 27 Division III New England Champions. He coached multiple Champions in the decathlon, including Steve Blum, the only athlete to win three multi-event titles.  Dr. Rose served as the President of the New England Division III Track and Field Coaches Association from 2003-’07 and the chair of the NCAA Track and Field rules committee from 2017-2019.

Rose was the Department Chair of Health and Physical Education for 10 years prior to being named the Director of Athletics.

As the Department Chair of Health and Physical Education Rose has lead the growth and advancement of physical education and fitness at CGA.  In 2014 Rose initiated the Physical Fitness Exam review which revamped fitness test protocols and scoring bringing them in line with current research in the movement science industry. Dr. Rose coordinated the Coast Guard Academy nutritional assessment study, a study done in association with all federal service academies.  This project ultimately yielded the first ever “cadet-athlete fueling station” at CGA.  Currently Rose is the Assistant-Principle Investigator of the Coast Guard Academy portion of the NCAA/DOD concussion study, part of the largest concussion study ever conducted.

Since 2012, Dan has been the primary sport administrator for 24 varsity programs. Dr. Rose has served as the tournament director of the All-Academy Wrestling Championship, Meet Referee of the NCAA (New England Region) Cross Country Championship, the Otto Graham Hall of Athletic Excellence project committee, project manager for the new cadet strength and conditioning center, and the liaison to the Bear Club, an athletic fundraising entity within the Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association.

Since assuming the Interim Director of Athletics role Dr. Rose’s efforts have yielded more than $450,000 in financial support for staff and facility improvements. Rose designed the new playing field layout for Cadet Memorial Field, an 82,000 square foot artificial “FieldTurf” installation, in June of 2019. He also secured sponsorship for a new Video Scoreboard which will offer instant replay and in-game graphic animations supporting football, men’s lacrosse and women’s lacrosse contests.

Rose proposed the current Cadet Strength & Conditioning Center project which provides over 8,000 square feet of state of the art fitness equipment and will re-imagine the East façade of Roland Hall. This facility more than doubled the old strength training space on campus and provides the perfect venue for cadet development under supervision of certified strength coaches.

Dan earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Springfield College where he threw both the shot put and discus and served as the track and field team captain during his senior season. Rose earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Connecticut in 2013.
