Thompson joins the Coast Guard Academy team after six years as assistant coach at Dartmouth College. While at Dartmouth, Thompson coached the Big Green to five top-5 finishes at ICSA National Championships with sailors earning 23 All-American Honors. Thompson coached Dartmouth to their first ever ICSA Match Race National Championship appearance (2nd in 2015) and first Team Race National Championship appearance (4th in 2019) in 9 years. Prior to joining Dartmouth, Thompson was the head coach of the University of Vermont Sailing Team for two and a half years and started his career as assistant coach at alma mater Hobart and William Smith Colleges for one season and has been success.

Outside of coaching, Thompson is a top active racer, especially in the team race discipline. Recently, Thompson has won the last three U.S. Team Race Midwinter Championships, won the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club Team Race Championship Trophy and won silver medals at the British Team Race Championship which is considered by most as the de facto Team Race World Championship. Thompson has also sailed competitively on the International J-70 and E Scow One Design Classes.

Thompson graduated from Hobart College in 2011 with degrees in Economics and Environmental Studies. He was a four year member of the varsity sailing team, team captain senior year, MVP senior year, and rookie of the year. During his senior year, he was an ICSA All-American Skipper while leading the team to the Oxford University Trophy for 2nd place at Coed Fleet Race National Championship and led the team to its first Team Race National championship appearance in 4 years.
