Patrick McCarney begins his 15th season as an assistant coach for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy men’s soccer program.

Coach McCarney has been instrumental in the technical and tactical development of the team. During his tenure, the Bears have won over 120 matches; qualified for the postseason in 10 out of 15 seasons (2012-14, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2023-25); has won an ECAC Championship (2012); and booked a trip to the NCAA Tournament (2014). 

A 1993 graduate of the University of Vermont, Coach McCarney has lived in Connecticut since 1995. Before joining Coast Guard men's soccer, he was the head boys' soccer coach at Stonington High School for eight years. During that time, Stonington went 74-56-9 and won three Eastern Connecticut Conference Medium Division titles. 

McCarney also coaches with the Southeast Soccer Club, where he is currently the head coach of the 2005/06 boys team. Outside of soccer he works as a social studies teacher at Stonington High School and lives in Pawcatuck with his wife, Kate, and his three children.
