Bears softball swept in midweek doubleheader at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. –

Coast Guard dropped both games of a NEWMAC doubleheader with Wellesley on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue (10-7 Overall, 3-3 NEWMAC) staged a seventh inning comeback to walk-off 2-1 in the opener. In game two, the Wellesley bats got hot to beat the Bears (10-8 Overall, 4-2 NEWMAC) by a score of 6-0 in game two.

In game one the Bears had Wellesley down to their final two outs with a 1-0 lead. A Wellesley single then double put runners at second and third with an out before sophomore Brynne Mellady tied the game at 1-1 on a fielders choice. A few pitches later, a wild pitch scored the winning run for Wellesley in heartbreaking fashion for the Bears,

Coast Guard had that 1-0 lead in the 7th thanks to scoring the opening run of the game in the top of the third inning. Junior Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, OH) reached on an error and subsequently got to second on a wild pitch. An RBI single to left from freshman first baseman Emma Stolarzyk (Danville, Calif.) brought in Schmutz to put the Bears up 1-0.

They nearly added a second run next inning when junior Mack Murnane (Castle Hayne, NC) blasted a double to deep left center with Emma Behel (Ellicott City, MD) on first, but a perfect Wellesley relay nailed the Bears' runner at the plate to keep the score at 1-0.

The aforementioned Behel started for CGA, going 3+ innings with only three baserunners allowed. In the fourth, senior right-hander Dana Walker (Macon, GA) entered the action with two runners on and no outs but a trio of ground outs kept the Blue scoreless.

In game two, the Wellesley offense came alive while the Bears were unable to get the bats going. The Blue scored one in the first, two in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth. Coast Guard meanwhile had traffic on the bases in every inning but the second but were unable to scratch anything across. The leader on the CGA offense was three hitter Maura Murphy (Bristow, VA) who went 2-3.

The best scoring chance for the Bears in game two was in the top of the fifth when Zoey Cascio (Burke, VA) and Ainsley Hololob (Yaphank, NY) each singled, with later both advancing to scoring position, but a two-out lineout kept the Bears scoreless.

Both teams will host NEWMAC doubleheaders at 3 & 5 PM on Friday, April 10. Wellesley welcomes Clark University while Coast Guard plays Wheaton College. Wheaton will enter that game Friday at 11-7, 2-2 in the NEWMAC.
