SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --
In a Friday afternoon doubleheader to kick off a busy four days for the Bears, Coast Guard fell to Springfield College by scores of 0-5 and 2-6. The losses drop CGA to 14-12 (8-6 NEWMAC). For the Pride, the wins improve them to 22-9 (12-4 NEWMAC). They will have the weekend off before their final non-conference games of the year in a Tuesday April 28th doubleheader vs Manhattanville.
Game One: Bears 0 - Pride 5; Box Score
In game one, the Bears were simply unable to get their bats going.
Abriana Schmutz (Marysville, OH),
Maura Murphy,
Zoey Lynn (Nokomis, FL), and
Dana Walker each had hits with Walker's triple as the only extra base hit of the day. Pride starter
Amelia DeRosa threw the complete game shutout with 10 Ks while walking none.
On the defensive side, the Bears made no errors in game one and starter
Emma Behel was solid, only allowing runs in two innings, pitching all six, and striking out five.Â
Game Two: Bears 2Â - Pride 6; Box Score
In game two, the Pride again jumped out ahead early with a 2-0 3rd inning lead but the Bears showed their fight to claw back into the game. In the top of the 4th, it was freshman
Ella Stolarzyk (Danville, CA) who set the table, leading off the inning with a single before the next two batters made outs to set up pinch-hitter
Lauren Ragonese (Liverpool, NY). Ragonese delivered with a two-out single to score Stolarzyk. With Ragonese on third, senior
Dana Walker delivered. Walker, who entered the day with no career triples, hit her second of the afternoon to tie the score at 2-2.
Dana Walker came up to the plate in the 4th inning after making history in the bottom of the 3rd. The senior flamethrower struck out her 400th career batter, making her just the 5th in Coast Guard history to do so and first since Bears legend
Hayley Feindel.
After the CGA rally in the 4th, Springfield took charge in the bottom half with four unearned runs and would not relinquish that advantage to take the game by a final of 6-2. The aforementioned Walker and Stolarzyk had two hits along with
Abriana Schmutz.
The Bears will take the field again tomorrow with a home doubleheader at 12:00 PM vs the Smith College Bears. Smith currently sits at 15-16, 7-7 NEWMAC after getting swept by #18 WPI earlier today. Prior to tomorrow's action, the Bears will honor their four seniors:
Bridget Bartz (Arlington, VA),
Emma Behel (Ellicott City, MD),
Maura Murphy (Bristow, VA), and
Dana Walker (Macon, GA).
