NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In the first ever meeting between Coast Guard and UMass Boston, the Beacons came out on top by a score of 4-3. UMass Boston improves to 16-12 with the win. They will get back to Little East Conference play with a Saturday April 18th doubleheader at Rhode Island College, with game one slated to start at 12:00 PM.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first by Bears starter
Harrison Milbert (Kingston, MA), CGA scratched one across in the bottom of the frame with an
Isaac Hobbs (Arlington, VA) single to score
Carson Cho (Haymarket, VA). Cho led off the game with an eight-pitch walk, advanced to second on a
Nate Stafford (Jupiter, FL) walk, and then stole third.
Milbert was again nails in the second, facing the minimum to conclude a strong two-inning outing. It was the middle innings that UMB broke through, scoring two runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to take a 4-1 advantage. Coast Guard got one run back immediately in the bottom of the 5th inning with a
Carson Cho bomb over the left field fence.
After chipping away with one a piece in the 5th, reliever
Conor Watts (Mahopac, NY) took over and kept the Bears alive with three strong innings of scoreless work. In the outing, Watts struck out two and allowed just three hits. Watts got a run of support in the 6th when again
Carson Cho came through with an RBI fielder's choice to score
Kael Godshalk (Bangor, PA) who led off the frame with a hit by pitch.
Entering the game for Watts in the 9th was lefthander
Blaise Oeding (Bloomington, IN). Oeding kept the score right where it was, forcing two popouts. The final out of the frame was made on a perfect throw by rookie catcher
Hudson Hauck (Wilmington, DE) to nail the UMB runner at second base, the second caught stealing of the game for Hauck, who was making his first career start.
In the bottom of the 9th, Coast Guard hit three balls hard including a deep fly ball by pinch hitter
Drew Basque (Kealakekua, HI) that was caught right at the wall, but Umass Boston was able to hang on for the 4-3 win.
The Bears loss drops them to 10-14 on the season, they will get back to NEWMAC play with a Saturday April 18th doubleheader vs Wheaton College with game one slated for a 12:00 PM start.
