Bears beat Springfield for the first time in program history

NEW LONDON, Conn. –

After winning four in a row coming into the day, Coast Guard continued their red hot streak with an 11-4 win over Springfield College. The victory not only is the team's fifth in a row, but marks the first time in program history that the Bears have defeated Springfield. The Pride fall to 3-6 (1-2 NEWMAC) with the loss. They will travel to Mount Holyoke on Wednesday April 1st at 6:00 PM vs Mount Holyoke.

The game started off with each side exchanging goals, Springfield with the first before Joely Schaumloffel(Remsenburg, NY) answered with a goal assisted by Rileigh Leary(Holden, MA). After the Pride took a 2-1 lead, Schaumloffel again evened it out, on assist from Abby McAllister(Pleasantville, NY). That goal however, kicked off a five goal run to close out the half and give Coast Guard a 6-2 lead at the break.

Springfield chipped away in the 3rd with two goals but scores by McAllister, Leary, and Schaumloffel extended the Bear lead to 9-4. Two early Springfield goals cut the CGA lead to just 9-6 with just over six minutes to go. At that six minute point, two penalties put the Bears down two players and gave Springfield a prime chance to get back into the game. Despite being down two players, the defensive front of Rowan Walsh(Hampstead, MD), Ella Campbell(Foxborough, MA), Gabriella Kraus-Rivera(West Linn, OR), and Lauren Henry(Monroe, CT) held strong and did not allow a goal. That defensive stand gave Coast Guard momentum and Abby McAllister converted to take a 10-6 lead.

Up 10-6 with under three to go, Coast Guard forced two key turnovers to put the Pride away before Elizabeth Pearcy(Philadelphia, PA) and Joely Schaumloffel delivered the dagger in the form of the team's 11th goal. For good measure, Gabriella Kraus-Rivera forced another turnover in the final seconds to secure the Bear's first win ever over Springfield.

Joely Schaumloffel led in goals with five, Abby McAllister just behind with three while Rileigh Leary, Taylor Thorne(Edgewater, MD), and Isabella Judge(Buffalo, NY) each added one. McAllister was the lone Bear with numerous assists with a game high four.

In the crease, Kailee Heron(West Islip, NY) was nails, with seven key saves and a team high tie in ground balls with three. Tied with Heron with three ground balls was Lauren Henry, with Leary, Judge, and Cate Yurko(Oakton, VA) each with two. Leary and Taylor Thorne combined for eight draw controls a well.

Gabriella Kraus-Rivera was a force on defense, forcing four turnovers. Joely Schaumloffel and Abby Keller(Souderton, PA) each caused three turnovers and picked up a ground ball a piece.

The red hot Bears, now 7-1(4-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Smith College next Saturday April 4th for a 1:00 PM battle of the bears. Smith College is currently 7-4(3-1 NEWMAC) after losing 16-8 vs Babson earlier today.
