BRISTOL, R.I. –
In their first games since coming back from spring break in Myrtle Beach, Coast Guard softball dropped two close games to the Hawks of Roger Williams, 4-0 and 2-1. The wins improve Roger Williams to 8-5 on the season. They will begin CNE conference play this Saturday, 12 PM March 28th at Curry College.
In game one, the Bears were unable to get the bats rolling. The lone CGA hit came from freshman first baseman
Ella Stolarzyk(Danville, CA) who also walked. On the mound, Coast Guard got strong performances from seniors
Dana Walker(Macon, GA) and
Emma Behel(Ellicott City, MD). The two combined for six strong innings, with Walker going five, striking out seven, and allowing just two earned runs. In relief, Behel threw the sixth, giving up one unearned run with two strikeouts.
In game two, the game went scoreless into the fourth inning when again
Ella Stolarzyk did damage for the Bears with an RBI single to score
Abriana Schmutz(Marysville, OH) who singled to start the inning.
Maura Murphy(Bristow, VA) and
Madeline Kibler(Effingham, IL) each singled as well but Coast Guard was unable to scratch any more runs across despite striking out just once as a team. Roger Williams tied it up with a
Hailey Williams single in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, it was again Williams supplying the damage with a walk-off single to beat the Bears in heartbreaking fashion.
On the mound in game two, freshman
Zoey Lynn(Nokomis, FL) was strong yet again, giving up just one earned in six innings of work.
The Bears fall to 6-4 with the losses. They will open up conference play this weekend with a doubleheader vs Clark University on Saturday March 28th at 12 PM. The Bears will be the hosts for the games at Waterford High School.
