NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia –
Despite a promising start to the day, Coast Guard fell to the Christopher Newport Captains by a final score of 15-4. CNU improves to 11-4 with the win. They will next host Wittenberg University on Friday March 13th at 3:00 PM.
As they have made a habit of during the spring break road trip, the Bears came out hot on offense, scoring three runs on five hits in the first inning. The three RBIs came from
Max Van Auken(Franklinville, NJ),
Drew Basque(Kealakekua, HI), and
Yadisson Karbalaieasghar(Coral Springs, FL). Also with hits were
Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) and
Isaac Hobbs(Arlington, VA) who improved to 2-3 on the season after his clutch single yesterday. For the Captains, after a two out walk in the bottom of the inning, a two run homer made the score 3-2 Bears into the 2nd.
After a scoreless 2nd for both squads, a CGA error in the 3rd allowed CNU to tie the score at 3-3. The Captains tacked on runs in the 4th and 5th as well to take a 7-3 lead.
In the 5th,
Nate Stafford(Jupiter, FL) narrowly missed tying the game with a wall ball double before
Max Van Auken narrowly missed scoring him with a lineout to short. They scratched one across in the 6th on a wild pitch but in the bottom of the 7th, CNU tacked on two more to open up a 9-4 lead. Newport added six more in the 8th to cap off a 15-4 win.
Drew Basque had three hits to lead the team,
Carson Cho,
Isaac Hobbs, and
Mason Phillips(Oak Park, IL) just behind with two.
The loss drops the Bears to 2-3 on the year. They will next face Westfield State at Springfield College on Saturday March 14th for a doubleheader.
