MIDDLETOWN, Conn. —
The United States Coast Guard Academy tennis team was shut out at Wesleyan University (Conn.) on Saturday, February 28th, losing the doubles point and all six singles matches.
Coast Guard drops to 0-2, while Wesleyan improves to 1-1. The Cardinals will open their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) schedule against Williams College (1-0) in their next set of matches on March 7th.
Wesleyan entered the meeting ranked 24th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coaches Poll.
The hosts swept all three doubles matches to claim the first point of the day. The Bears' top pair of
Ben Bonetto (Bend, Oreg.) and
Brendan Love (Winchester, Va.) put up the best effort with a 3-6 loss to
Harry Collomb and
Chase Burke at #1 Doubles.
Bonetto was also put forth Coast Guard's best singles performance on the day despite with on 0-2 loss to Collomb at #1 Singles. The Cardinal outlasted the Bears' ace with a 7-6 first set victory on a 7-4 tiebreaker before taking the second by a score of 6-2.
Bears tennis will get a month off before returning on March 28th to open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Clark University (6-0). The Cougars took last season's meeting with a 6-1 result, the lone point coming from Bonetto's singles win.
