Volleyball falls to #20 Babson in hard-fought sweep

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

Saturday, October 3rd, the United States Coast Guard Academy women's volleyball team hosted Babson College for a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest in Alumni Gymnasium at Roland Hall.

This match ended in three sets in favor of the Babson Beavers. With this loss, the Bears are currently 9-4 overall and 1-2 in NEWMAC play. Babson College's record now becomes 11-2 and 3-1 in the NEWMAC.

Even though the Beavers swept the Bears, all three sets finished with a three-point or less margin. The first set was back and forth with neither side able to take control of the match. The largest lead of the first set was 11-6 in favor of Coast Guard, until Babson clawed back and kept the set intense. The Beavers came out on top at the end of set one with a final score of 25-22.

The second set was both sides going back and forth again, but this set was even closer, as neither side held more than a two-point advantage over the other. This was the highest scoring set of the day with a final score of 26-24 in favor of the Beavers, giving them an opportunity to sweep the Bears.

In the third and final set, the Bears came up just short. They held a 9-4 lead, but allowed the Beavers to score and swing momentum in their favor. Coast Guard would still put up a fight but could not come out on top, as Babson won the last set 25-23.

Standout players for this game include Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.) who led all players with 12 kills; Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Calif.), who finished the game with 13 points; Courtney Shire (Cape May, N.J.), who recorded 14 digs; Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawai'i), who finished with 20 assists.

Coast Guard women's volleyball will continue NEWMAC play this Tuesday, October 6th, as they travel to Wellesley College (8-4, 2-2) for a match at 7 PM EST.
