NEW LONDON, Conn. –
It was a day of celebration for the Bears. Prior to the first match of the day, Coast Guard celebrated their seven seniors:
Abby Schweitzer (Emmaus, Pa.),
Julia Gallinger (Garrison, N.Y.),
Eloise Shirley (Rock Island, Ill.),
Courtney Shire (Cape May, N.J.),
Keira Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa.),
MG Delfino (Alpharetta, Ga.) and
Sam Ventimiglia (Key West, Fla.).
Match One Box Score
In the first set, it was three seniors who stood out on the stat line. Schweitzer led in kills with 12, Shire led in digs with 17, and Shirley led in blocks with four. Joining Schweitzer in double-digit kills were
Corey Lemmer (San Francisco, Calif.) with 11 and
Alaina Corbin (Stafford, Va.) with 10. Alongside Shire with double-digit digs were
Ava Ahokovi (Honolulu, Hawaii) with 13 and
MG Delfino with 12. Ahokovi was also the team leader in assists with 20.
The first set started off on the wrong foot for the Bears, who lost the first in a much-needed NEWMAC battle with Wheaton by a score of 25-23. They were able to bounce back however with a 25-16 set two win to even the sets won at one a piece.
Set three was the main event. The teams went back-and-forth all set long in the pivotal third set trying to take the 2-1 advantage. Each team had set points, Coast Guard first at 24-23 before the Lyons got it themselves after back-to-back points. Facing set point,
Julia Gallinger came through off a set from Ahokovi to tie the score at 25-25. After the point, Gallinger took the service line and after an
Abby Schweitzer kill, she had the chance to put CGA up 2-1 in the match. After a free ball onto their side of the court gave Coast Guard prime opportunity,
Eloise Shirley took advantage with the kill to clinch the set. In the fourth, the Bears cruised to a 25-16 win, with a
Corey Lemmer kill capping it all off.
Throughout the first match, two freshmen excelled at the service line with both
Addison Krajicek (Aviano, Italy) and
Asia Fulp (Seaside, Calif.) getting two aces. For Fulp, there were over 10 points in the match that came while she was at the line.
Match Two Box Score
After a lengthy five-setter between Wheaton and Johnson & Wales, the Bears finally took the floor against the Wildcats of JWU. What ensued was a déjà vu all over again match in which the Bears dropped the first set before rallying back to win the next three. Unlike in the match vs Wheaton, there was little drama in the final three sets with commanding CGA wins of 25-16, and 25-14, before staving off a fourth set attempt by the Wildcats in a 25-20 match-clinching win.
Both
Eloise Shirley and
Julia Gallinger put up lopsided numbers in the JWU match, Shirley with seven blocks and Gallinger with five aces.
Abby Schweitzer and
Corey Lemmer each had 11 kills, with
Ava Ahokovi and
Holly Davis (Sisters, Ore.) combining for 39 assists. Ahokovi was also second on the team in digs with 13, behind
Courtney Shire's 22.
The Bears rise to 11-6 with the sweep, they will travel to Salve Regina on Tuesday October 20th at 6:00 pm. The Seahawks are currently 7-13 after splitting a tri-match with Smith and Simmons earlier this afternoon.
