Women's Soccer stymies NEWMAC foes Clark for scoreless draw

NEW LONDON, Conn. —

The United States Coast Guard Academy women's soccer was able to force a scoreless draw against New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) adversaries Clark University on Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field. The Bears were able to earn a point on the league table despite an onslaught of 22 shots from their guests.

Coast Guard moves to 2-5-6 on the season and 0-3-4 against NEWMAC opponents, while the Cougars move to 6-4-2 overall and 2-3-2 in-conference. Clark will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, the 21st, when they host league foes Mount Holyoke College (3-7-4, 0-5-2).

The day held special significance for all involved as the Coast Guard women's soccer team's annual Pink Game, played for breast cancer awareness. The Bears donned pink accessories to their usual home white kits in support of the cause.

After the first 45 minutes went by without a shot on goal, Bears junior Mary Arengo (Cincinnati, Ohio) sent one to the bottom left corner just 22 seconds into the second half, but it was knocked away and out for a corner on a dive by the Cougars' keeper. Senior goalie Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) faced good tries from the Clark offense in the 50th and 52nd. She handled both for her first two saves of the day.

Little would finish the day with a total of five saves, while Arengo's try was Coast Guard's lone shot on goal of the game. Clark held a massive 22-3 advantage in shots taken, but were limited to just five on goal thanks to some great work by senior Lulu Vlases (Bozeman, Mont.) and sophomore Ellie Millner (Woodbridge, Va.) in the back row. Clark also held a 9-5 lead on corners.

The Bears were called for nine fouls to the Cougars' seven. Four yellow cards were dealt in the game, with each side receiving two.

Coast Guard women's soccer returns on Wednesday the 21st, looking to end their eight-game streak without a win at fellow NEWMAC side Salve Regina (7-3-3, 2-4). Last season's meeting between the Bears and the Seahawks at Nitchman Field ended in a scoreless draw.
