NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy men's swimming & diving team found themselves on the wrong side of a 98-199 result versus Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday at Roland Pool.
Noah Reice (Wilmington, Del.) accounted for both of the Bears wins in their home opener against the reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champions.
Coast Guard drops to 6-3, while MIT improves to 3-1. The Engineers will make a crosstown trip to Division I opponents Boston University (4-3) for their next meet on Saturday, January 17th.
Coming into the match-up, MIT was ranked #7 in the most recent College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Dual Meet Poll, released on
December 19th.
Reice once again led the way for the Bears with a pair of first-place finishes. He touched the wall first in the 100 Free with a time of 46.21, and did it again later in the 100 Fly at 49.97.
Zach McGowen (Springfield, Va.) picked up a pair of top-3 finishes, placing second in the 100 Back (53.05) and third in the stroke's 200-yard variant (1:58.12). Distance specialist
Jay Pawloski (St. Leonard, Md.) found himself in the same category, taking the runner-up spot in the 1000 Free (10:08.25) and later third in the 500 Free (4:57.93).
Leon Zhang (Cary, N.C.) placed second in the 200 Fly (2:01.53) and notching third-place finishes were
Grant Hudson (Peachtree City, Ga.) in the 200 Free (1:48.07);
Baylor Weiler (Lexington, Ky.) in the 100 Back (53.99);
Jason Manzo (Helotes, Tex.) in the 100 Breast (1:01.47);
Blaise Minckler (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) in the 200 Fly (2:04.13);
Andrew Carlson (Spring, Tex.) in the 50 Free (21.96);
Charles Gaines (Macon, Ga.) in the 100 Fly (51.99); and
Jordan Jansen (Tampa, Fla.) in the 200 IM (1:59.03).
Finally, relay action saw the 400 Medley crew of Carlson,
Matt Carper (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Gaines, and Reice place as runners-up with a time of 3:31.62. Reice, McGowen, Carlson, and Parks later teamed up in the 200 Free Relay for another second-place finish of 1:26.82.

Bears men's swim & dive will be back in action next Saturday, January 17th, for their annual rivalry meet against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Last year's contest at Roland was a raucous 171-129 win for Coast Guard on Senior Day.
