ABINGTON, Pa. —
The Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team was able to force a 1-1 draw with hosts Penn State Abington on Saturday thanks to some late-game heroics by
Jake Fish (Little Silver, N.J.).
Coast Guard has a one in each column following the tie, while Abington remains searching for their first win of 2025 at 0-3-1.
Neither team was able to find an advantage until Abington found themselves with a corner kick opportunity near the end of the 81st. The Nittany Lions lobbed the ball into the box, where
Ryan Lawlor's initial volley to the bottom center was stopped in excellent diving fashion by team captain
Jack Putnam (Halfmoon, N.Y.). With Putnam on the ground,
Hugh Nungassor was able to take advantage and put the ricochet into the back of the net to give his team the lead with less then ten minutes remaining.
The Bears seemed destined to move to 1-2 on the year until a Nittany Lions foul in the 85th minute set Coast Guard up with a free kick about 30 yards out. Fish was called upon for the attempt and sent a ship shot over a moving wall of blue Bears and white Lions. Abington keeper
Keegan Courduff went low, but the ball went high and bounced over the dropping keeper to deliver the equalizer.
Outside of the two scores, both teams were evenly matched in terms of shot attempts (5) and shots on goal (2), while Abington held a slim 4-2 lead on corner kicks and was called for 13 fouls to Coast Guard's 12. Both teams were also administered three yellow cards each. In his first game of the season after missing the Bears' first two games with a sprained pinky, Putnam matched Courduff with one save.
Bears men's soccer returns to Nitchman on Tuesday, September 6th, as hosts of Eastern Connecticut State University. The Warriors are off to a 2-1 start but dropped a 0-1 decision to Emerson College in their most recent game on Friday, September 5th. Coast Guard and ECSU played to a 2-2 draw in last season's face-off, with
Cole Miller (Annapolis, Md.) scoring the first goal off a Fish pass and recent graduate
ENS Michael O'Brien scoring the equalizer with help from
Naveen Jayaram (Tampa, Fla.).
