BOSTON, Mass. –
In a weekday matchup at Little East opponent UMass Boston, Coast Guard fell 4-1 to the Beacons.
The Bears dug themselves into an early hole, giving up two goals in the first eight minutes. Scoring both goals for the Beacons was sophomore sensation
Sofia Schallmo(Norwood, MA).
Forced to play from behind, Coast Guard chipped away late in the first half on a goal from
Mia Carabajal-Hartog(Los Lunas, NM). On a perfect centering pass from
Lulu Vlases(Bozeman, MT), Carabajal-Hartog headed the ball into the back of the net and cut their deficit in half. It was a score to remember for the sophomore, as her first career collegiate goal. For Vlases, after leading the Bears in points last year, the assist gave her the 2025 lead with three.
The goal gave Coast Guard a chance to go into the half with some momentum but less than two minutes after CGA scored, the Beacons answered with a goal of their own.
Coming out of the half up two, UMass Boston scored a dagger goal almost immediately. After a questionable Bears fou call in the box just two minutes into half two,
Sofia Schallmo completed her hat trick by converting the penalty kick to give the Beacons a 4-1 lead that would hold as the final. Schallmo now has 19 career goals just 18 games into her young career.
UMass Boston(2-0) will next host Russell Sage College on Saturday September 6th at 3:00 PM.
Despite the 4-1 score, the Bears had opportunities. They dominated the corner battle(7-1) and got off as many shots as UMass Boston(10) with just two fewer on goal(7-5). Beyond Carabajal-Hartog who scored,
Elena Millner(Woodbridge, VA),
Arwen Wise(Weatherford, TX), and
Anabelle Pezzullo(Ashaway, RI) had the shots on goal for the Bears.
The Bears(0-3) will get their first opportunity to play in front of their home crowd this weekend with a 12:00 PM kickoff vs DeSales University.
