NEW LONDON, Conn.--
Coast Guard hung around all three sets but the firepower from MIT was too much to overcome despite their valiant effort. Across the three sets, Coast Guard led on six different occasions and had the tie scored many times throughout the day. For MIT, they won behind stellar play up front. Middle
Ali Gibbs(Chagrin Falls, OH) had a match high 15 kills and .636 attack percentage for the Engineers who improved to 10-3, 2-0 NEWMAC.
Coast Guard spread the wealth on offense. Despite the Engineer's potent front row, six different Bears recorded a kill. After a career day on Tuesday, freshman pin attacker
Corey Lemmer(San Francisco, CA) again posted for CGA. Lemmer tied for the team high with eight kills, she also had an impressive .438 attack percentage.
Tied with Lemmer for the team lead in kills was
Amelia Matson(Mililani, HI) who also contributed eight digs. Just behind her was
Abby Schweitzer(Emmaus, PA) with seven.
Eloise Shirley(Rock Island, IL) was three for six on the attack for a team high .500 attack percentage and the savvy setter
Ava Ahokovi(Honolulu, HI) converted both of her attack chances. Ahokovi was the only Bear to record an assist today with 24, while also recording five digs and the only CGA service ace on the day.
Leading the way in digs was libero
Laila Baameur(Bakersfield, CA) who had 12 in a gutsy performance. Behind Baameur was
Courtney Shire(Cape May, NJ) with 10 and the aforementioned Matson and Ahokovi just behind her. Four other CGA women recorded at least one dig including the six foot middle
Sam Ventimiglia(Key West, FL) who had two.
The loss drops the Bears to 8-4, 0-2 NEWMAC. Despite dropping both, Coast Guard proved they could hang with Smith and MIT, both of whom made the national tournament last season and are either ranked or receiving votes currently. They will have their first road test of the conference season on Tuesday at Clark University at 6:00 PM.
