WORCESTER, Mass. —
The Coast Guard Academy men's soccer team started their NEWMAC slate with a scoreless draw at Clark University on Saturday in a broadly even game.
Coast Guard moves to 3-2-2, while Clark moves to 3-1-1; both teams start conference play at 0-0-1. The Cougars will host Eastern Connecticut State University (4-2) for their next one on Wednesday, September 4th.
Neither team was able to find an advantage amid even shot selection from both sides. The teams finished with 11 shots a piece, both taking five in the first half and six in the second, while Coast Guard held a 6-2 edge for shots on goal. The forward duo of
Jake Fish (Little Silver, N.J.) and
Aki Freeman (San Diego, Calif.) led the blue and orange side in shots with four each, while Freeman was the more on target between the pair with two aimed at net. On the other end of the pitch,
Ben Siegel led Clark with five shots and was one of only two Cougars, next to
Brendan Stevenson, to have one directed between the posts.
Clark held a slight 8-6 edge on the corners while being whistled for 12 fouls to the Bears nine. Stevenson was also awarded the only card of the game, earning himself a yellow for a hard foul in the 83rd minute.
Men's soccer will be back at it on Tuesday, September 23rd, this time as hosts of Rhode Island College (1-1-4). The Bears were victors in last season's match-up to a tune of a 3-0 result, made possible in part by an 48th minute goal from
Andres Villasana (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.).
