Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In a hard fought, evenly matched battle, Coast Guard fell 1-0 to cross-street rival Connecticut College. With the victory, Conn College improves to 3-1. They will next start the NESCAC gauntlet with a road game at Bowdoin Saturday at noon.
Conn very nearly dug the Bears in a hole immediately when a
Lucy Hurlbut(Westport, CT) shot hit the crossbar just under two minutes into the game. The freshman Hurlbut would be a problem all day for Coast Guard with six shots and stellar all-around play.
With 30 minutes left in the half, the Bears got their first big opportunity. Off a corner kick from
Lulu Vlases(Bozeman, MT),
Mia Carabajal-Hartog(Los Lunas, NM) sent a header just high over Conn's goal.
With 18:55 remaining, it was again
Lulu Vlases as the facilitator to a Coast Guard chance. The junior forward forced a Conn error and found
Mia Forti(Durham, CT) alone in the box but after Forti appeared to have scored, she was deemed offsides and the goal was called off.
CGA got another opportunity just a minute later when the ball was rolling all alone towards the Conn goal with just Bears freshman
Ellie Millner(Woodbridge, VA) and Conn keeper
Maia Kafer(Philadelphia, PA) closing in on it. They arrived at the ball at the same time, both ending up on the turf, but Kafer was able to stop the ball in its tracks and keep Millner from finding the net.
After hitting the cross bar early on, the Bears struck lightning again with 15 minutes remaining on the clock in the first with Hurlbut from Conn hitting the cross bar yet again. This time however, the Camels were able to secure the rebound and score the first goal of the evening off the foot of
Mae Mastrullo(Hudson, MA). The game would go the half at that score of 1-0.
In the 1st half, the Bears had five shots, one on goal.
After two Conn crossbars in the first,
Mia Forti gave the Bears a taste of coming oh so close when the senior hit the post for the Bears, just narrowly missing the game tying score.
Through the first 10 minutes of half two, the teams combined for eight shots with neither able to find the back of the net. The Bears came close, on both the aforementioned Forti post ball and some great centering passes that they were unable to reap the benefits of.
As the game was winding down, Coast Guard seldom saw strong opportunities at the goal, with the Camels locking down on defense to maintain the 1-0 win and take home the Whale Cup.
The game was physical, but clean, with no cards awarded to either side. Senior captain
Teal Wasson(Kahuku, HI) had an outstanding game on both offense and defense for the Bears. Wassan, along with
Mia Lambert(Rome, Italy),
Bianca McIntosh(Woodbridge, VA), and
Mia Carabajal-Hartog, played all 90 minutes for CGA. In goal for the Bears for the entirety of the game was
Julia Little(Pensacola, FL), who made four saves.
Coast Guard will be on the road Saturday to face rival Merchant Marine at noon. The Coast Guard Academy currently leads KP 2-1 in the 2025-26 Superintendent's Trophy standings but the Men's soccer team plays KP first on Friday evening.
