Bears hit their way to history books in doubleheader sweep over Emerson

WALTHAM, Mass. –

In the final regular season games of the season for both teams, Coast Guard swept the Emerson Lions by scores of 6-0 and 12-2. With the sweep at the hands of the Bears, Emerson concludes their season with a record of 8-22(2-14 NEWMAC).

Last season, Coast Guard broke their single season wins record with a 24 win campaign. With their doubleheader sweep today, the Bears again have set a new mark for single season wins at 25.

In game one, Coast Guard was clicking on all cylinders. They got 12 hits, allowed just three hits, and did not allow an Emerson runner to score, with no Lion runner even reaching scoring position until the 8th. The two Bears pitchers who combined for the shutout were John DiMarsico(Severna Park, MD) and Raymond Priddy(Chico, CA). The freshman DiMarsico earned his 6th victory of the season with six innings of three hit ball, walking none, and striking out three. Priddy went the final three to earn the save, not allowing a hit and striking out two.

After the first two innings went scoreless, the Bears hit parade started in the top of the 3rd. Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) led off the inning with a single before Parker Madden(Ruston, LA) notched his second hit of the day with an RBI double to score Stafford. Madden would end the day 3-6 to lead the team in hits. Three batters after Madden's double, he would score on a single from Connor Cilento(Point Pleasant, NJ). They would get their third run of the inning the next batter on a Jack Steel(Medford Lakes, NJ) opposite field single.

Coast Guard would tack on a fourth run the next inning on an Emerson error(one of six in the game) before opening up for another run in the 8th and an insurance run in the top of the 9th.

It was in the 6th however, when the Bears hit their first of many historic milestones of the day, concluding with the aforementioned team wins record. When Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) led off the inning with a double, he not only added his name to the 100 career hit club but also set a new single season doubles record with 17, and set a new single season hits record with 60. The double machine Cho made more single season history later in the day by scoring his 45th run of the year, a new school record. The previous single season runs and hits record were held by Cho's teammates Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) and Nathan Stafford respectively, who set the marks last season.

In game two, CGA jumped ahead 3-0 right away. After Stafford scored on an error, Rick Barkley(Bellevue, WA) sent a double over the centerfielder's head to score two. Like Cho in game one, Barkley too etched his name at the top of the Coast Guard single season record book. The two RBI gave Rick 95 on his career, tying the Bears best single-season mark.

Coast Guard opened the game up in the 4th for four runs, with RBI hits from Stafford, Madden, and Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL). In the 7th, a Drew Basque(Kealakekua, HI) double and Jack Steel sacrifice fly made the score 9-2. They would secure the win by an even 10 runs in the 9th when Carson Cho tripled to score Percifield and Blake George(Bethlehem, PA) before Cho himself scored the next batter on a Nate Stafford sacrifice fly. Ryan Karman(Sayville, NY) slammed the door shut in the bottom in the 9th, not allowing a baserunner and striking out two to clinch the Bears 25th win this year.

Starting on the mound was Harrison Milbert(Kingston, MA). Milbert struck out two, allowing just two hits and two runs in four innings pitched. Earning the win in relief was junior flamethrower Tyler Michalek(Haslet, TX) who did not allow a hit and struck out six in three dominant innings. Bridging to Karman in the 9th was Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) who threw the 8th, not allowing anyone to reach base and striking out one.

With the 25-12 regular season(12-4 NEWMAC), Coast Guard has earned the #2 seed and clinched a first round bye in the NEWMAC playoffs. They will host the winner of the #3 and #6 team matchup on Friday May 9th at a time TBD.
