Bears drop tight battle at Salve in NEWMAC Quarterfinal

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. –

On a cool, windy Tuesday evening, Coast Guard fell 10-8 in a back-and-forth affair with the Salve Regina Seahawks. In the game, there were five ties and six lead changes between the teams with Salve ultimately winding out on top. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 12-5. They will travel to Springfield College on Thursday May 1st.

Much like they did on Saturday vs Babson College, Coast Guard fell behind early, trailing 2-0 three minutes into the action after two quick Seahawk goals. Unlike Saturday, they would not allow themselves to get down by four, with an Eric Key(Clarksville, MD) goal assisted by Max Silver(Jupiter, FL). A minute later CGA would tie the score at two after a Ben Nocerito(Severna Park, MD) caused turnover on defense led to Ezekiel Christian(Stonington, CT) finding Ryan Hunter(Bethesda, MD) on offense for a goal. The Bears would take their first lead of the night with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter on another Eric Key goal and that 3-2 lead would hold into the second.

After nearly seven minutes of scoreless lacrosse to begin the second, CGA took a 4-2 lead from an unlikely source. Coming into the day, defender Jamison Wildt(Arnold, MD) had only one career goal but on a pass from Mason LaForte(Waterford, CT), Wildt found the back of the net to push the Bears lead to two. In the final eight minutes of the quarter, Salve Regina would score two unanswered goals to head into halftime tied at 4-4.

In the third quarter, neither team was able to take charge with back and forth scoring throughout the frame. Salve scored first to take a 5-4 lead but less than a minute later, Nolan Grizzle(Severna Park, MD) tied the game right back up again with a score of his own. Nearing the 10 minute mark of the third, fellow freshman Ryder Bonser(Spring Branch, TX) gave the Bears the lead back with a goal to capitalize on a possession that lasted nearly two minutes after two missed shots. Grizzle scored his second goal of the quarter just over a minute later to take the 7-7 lead but much like they had in the second quarter, Salve put up two unanswered goals to end the quarter in a tie. The Seahawks appeared poised to take a lead into the fourth with a shot at the 30 second mark but Brett Tobasky(Brookline, MA) made a stellar save to keep the score at 7-7. On the game, Tobasky was again spectacular with 14 saves in a gutsy performance.

In the fourth, the Bears were forced to play from behind after two quick Salve Goals to tie for the largest lead of the night for either team at two. At the 7:30 mark, Ezekiel Christian scored a clutch goal to cut the deficit to one but Salve answered shortly after to extend it to two scores again with five minutes remaining. In those final minutes, CGA could not get anything going on offense with that 10-8 score holding as the final. The Bears were not without opportunity in the fourth, but turned the ball over five times.

With the loss, Coast Guard finishes their 2025 campaign with a 9-6 record. The game tonight marks the final game in the careers of Nick Butler, Ryan Hunter, Mason LaForte, Luke Nemsick, Oliver Bolton, Carson Throne, and Trent Lewis.
