Bears complete season sweep of Springfield with 5-3 victory

NEW LONDON, Conn. –

In a Tuesday afternoon NEWMAC battle, Coast Guard defeated Springfield by a score of 5-3. The loss drops Springfield to 11-22(4-10 NEWMAC). The Pride will next face cross-town rival Western New England Thursday May 1st at 3:30 PM.

Coast Guard jumped out in front right away and never gave up the lead. After Vito Giordano(Scarsdale, NY) sat down Springfield 1-2-3 in the top of the inning, Parker Madden(Ruston, LA) gave Vito a three run cushion. After Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) reached on an error to start the inning, Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) sent a screaming line drive over the left fielder's head for a double before Madden drove both men in with a three-run homer.

The 3-0 score would hold until the 4th inning much thanks to stellar defensive play for the Bears. In the 2nd inning, a Carson Cho seed from right field right to the mitt of Parker Madden cut down Springfield's first potential run at the plate. Then in the 3rd, Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) made an outstanding catch on a bloop over his head to steal a hit. In the 4th, Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA) hit a sacrifice fly to score Connor Cilento(Point Pleasant, NJ) who led off the inning with a hit by pitch. An inning later they would tack on another run with a Duthu single to score Nate Stafford.

Starting on the mound for the Bears was Vito Giordano who was masterful in his outing. He earned his seventh win of the season with six innings of scoreless work, allowing just two hits and walking none.

In the 7th, Springfield got on the board with a two run homer just fair down the right field line. In the 8th, they would get another but Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) shut them down in the 9th to earn his 4th save of the season and clinch the win for the Bears.

The Bears win improves them to 22-12(10-4 NEWMAC). They will get right back at it tomorrow at 3:30 PM with a non-conference matchup vs Nichols College. Prior to tomorrow's action, Coast Guard will honor their nine seniors: Aidan Andersen(Waukesha, WI), Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL), Bode Dykens(Lamoni, IA), Blake George(Bethlehem, PA), Grayson Irwin(Wilmington, DE), Ryan Lista(San Diego, CA), Parker Madden(Ruston, LA), Sean Rojas(San Antonio, TX), and Jack Steel(Medford Lakes, NJ).
