NEWPORT, R.I. –
In a Friday twin bill at Salve Regina, the Bears split with the Seahawks, losing game one 3-7 but coming back to win the second 3-1. For Coast Guard, they have now split in eight different double headers this season including six of their seven NEWMAC matchups. For Salve, the split brings them to 11-21(6-10 NEWMAC). They will travel to Babson College on Sunday April 27th for a doubleheader vs the Beavers starting at 12:00 PM.
Coast Guard jumped out ahead right away in game one when
Emma Behel(Ellicott City, MD) singled in
Abriana Schmutz(Marysville, OH) to take a 1-0 lead. Salve answered right away with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. In the 2nd, the Bears fought right back, tying the game with a Schmutz single to score
Lauren Ragonese(Liverpool, NY). In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Salve again scored twice but this time CGA was unable to answer, ultimately losing by a score of 7-3.
In game one,
Abriana Schmutz led the way with three hits. Just trailing her were
Emma Behel and
Mack Murnane(Wilmington, NC) who had two each.
In game two, the Bears did all the scoring they would need in the first inning. After three hits in game one,
Abriana Schmutz stayed hot with a lead off walk in game two. She would come around to score when starting pitcher
Dana Walker(Macon, GA) helped herself out with an RBI single. They would score twice more on a two RBI single by
Bridget Bartz(Arlington, VA).
After the first inning, the Bears would not score but junior ace
Dana Walker had all the run support she needed. Walker threw yet another gem with a complete game allowing just one run on five hits with six strikeouts. The stellar outing gives Walker her 10th win of the season.
Coast Guard will next face WPI at home with a Sunday doubleheader vs the Engineers on April 27th.
