Bears split with Emerson in Tuesday doubleheader

BOSTON, Mass. –

In the Bears and Lions fourth attempt to play these games after three rainouts, each team won a game with Emerson taking game one 4-2 and Coast Guard taking game two 2-1. The split brings Emerson's season record to 16-12(8-6 NEWMAC). They will host fellow beantown rival MIT in a doubleheader on Friday April 25th at 3:00 PM.

In game one, the Coast Guard offense was unable to get things going and their defense gave Emerson too many chances. The Lions scored one run in the 2nd, and two in the 3rd which proved to be a hole too deep to dig out of. CGA would chip away with one run in the 4th when Madeline Kibler(Effingham, IL) scored on a wild pitch. In the 6th, Kibler would score again, this time on an Abriana Schmutz(Marysville, OH) single to cut the Lion lead in half. In the 7th, the Bears would get the tying run to the plate after Dana Walker(Macon, GA) hit a pinch hit single but they would go down quietly after and strand Walker.

On the mound for the Bears was Emma Behel(Ellicott City, MD). The junior righthander earned the tough-luck loss in a complete game effort allowing no earned runs and striking out four.

In game two, the Coast Guard offense wasted no time scoring, going up 1-0 in the first. With two outs, Abriana Schmutz singled to get the rally started. Schmutz would score the first run of the game when, after singling in the 7th of game one, Dana Walker stayed hot with an RBI double in the gap.

Emerson would tie the score at 1-1 in the 2nd inning but from there the two pitchers put on a clinic, neither allowing a run for the duration of regulation. In the bottom of the 7th, after Emerson got the winning run on base with no outs, Dana Walker beared down to retire the next three batters and send the game to extra innings.

In extras, the Bears would win the ballgame with fundamental offense, and without needing a hit. With the extra-inning runner rule placing Lauren Ragonese(Liverpool, NY), Mack Murnane(Wilmington, NC) did her job with a sacrifice bunt to advance Ragonese to third. Then, Emma Behel drove her in with a sacrifice fly to left field to take a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Emerson; much like Coast Guard, advanced the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt. However, Dana Walker forced a clutch punch out for the second out of the inning before getting a ground out to second for the final out to close out the extra inning, complete game victory.

The split brings CGA to 10-11-1(5-7 NEWMAC). They will continue their tough three doubleheader week tomorrow in a home battle with Albertus Magnus at 3:00 PM.
