NEW LONDON, Conn. –
In the first of two battles this weekend between the CGA and WPI, Coast Guard came out victorious by a score of 7-2. For the Engineers of WPI, they drop to 11-14 on the season and 0-6 in conference. The teams will next play each other on Sunday April 13th, 1:00 PM at Coast Guard.
The day started as a pitching duel between the teams, with no runs being scored in the first five innings. In the sixth, the Bears drew first blood.
Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL) and
Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA) led off the inning with back to back singles and would both advance on a balk. After back to back popouts, WPI appeared on the verge of escaping the jam but
Rick Barkley(Seattle, WA) picked up the Bears with a two RBI single to score both Percifield and Cho.
In the 7th, CGA would break the game open, scoring four more, three of which came from the bat of
Carson Cho. Cho ripped a double down the left field line to score
Jack Steel(Medford Lakes, NJ),
Kael Godshalk(Bengor, PA) and
Luke Percifield. Carson would score himself when
Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) reached on an error. Cho ended the day 3-4, nearly half of the Bears hits(7).
In the 8th, the Bears scored another without needing a hit.
Connor Cilento hustled his way to first base on a WPI error before stealing second base and advancing the third on an errant throw to second. With the freshman 90 feet from the plate and the infield back, senior
Jack Steel played some small ball and scored him with a ground ball to short.
On the mound for the Bears was sophomore stud
Vito Giordano(Scarsdale, NY) who gave the Bears bullpen the day off, pitching all nine for the club. In his nine innings, Giordano allowed just three hits, two runs, and walked none while striking out a season high 11. On the season, Vito is now 5-0 with an ERA of 2.09.
The win gives the Bears their 15th of the season(15-9). They improve to 4-2 in conference play and will look to complete the sweep of WPI on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
