WASHINGTON, D.C. –
After both Coast Guard and Catholic earned five run victories(7-2 CGA and 5-0 Catholic) on Saturday, the two squads faced off in the series deciding game this afternoon. The Catholic Cardinals would wind up victorious with a 9-0 win over CGA. The win improves Catholic to 5-4 on the year, they will next host Kean on March 11th at 12:00 PM.
Through the first three innings, both teams were scoreless with the only two hits coming from Coast Guard bats
Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) and
Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL). In the 4th however, Catholic broke the game open, scoring four runs in the bottom of the frame. They would scratch across another run in the 6th and give themselves a cushion with four more in the 8th, with CGA unable to get a run to cross the plate for the second game in a row.
Two Bears had multiple hits,
Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) and
Luke Percifield, who had two each.
In the 9th inning,
Connor Cilento(Point Pleasant, NJ) got his first career hit in an unlikely fashion. Cilento was sent up to pinch hit in an 0-2 count after a teammate was injured mid AB, despite having two strikes on him to start his AB, the freshman worked the count and laced a single up the middle for his first collegiate knock.
On the mound, CGA walked nine batters to just one from Catholic with neither team committing an error.
The loss drops Coast Guard to 3-2 on the year, they will next travel to #17 Randolph-Macon Tuesday at 3:30 PM.
