NEW LONDON, Conn. - In today's baseball clash at Mitchell College, Coast Guard crossed the plate 18 times on 18 hits in an overpowered offensive display while shutting down the Mariners' offense for three runs and five hits.
Coast Guard improves to 2-0, while Mitchell loses their second straight and moves to 2-4. The Mariners will try to get back in the win column on Thursday, March 6th, while hosting undefeated UMass Boston (5-0).
The first two innings of scoreless ball felt like a fond memory for Mitchell after Coast Guard put together an eight-run third inning.
Drew Basque (Kealakekua, Hawaii) and
Luke Percifield (Pinellas Park, Fla.) drove in two RBIs each on a double to center field and a single up the middle, respectively, as the Bears batted around.
Mitchell was blanked in their bottom half at-bats but was able to do the same to Coast Guard in the top of the fourth. The Mariners were able to cut into the lead in the bottom fourth thanks to a single up the middle by
Michael Ficocelli (North Providence, R.I.), but
Nate Stafford (Jupiter, Fla.) erased that run and added to the deficit with a two-run shot to right-center in the top of the fifth.
Coast Guard put three more runs on the board in the top of the sixth, with
Carson Cho (Haymarket, Va.) driving in two with a single to left-center. The Mariners got one back in the bottom half, as a
Thai-ler Sestokas (Danbury, Conn.) grounder to shortstop drove a run in to cut the deficit to 14-2.
The Bears extended their lead in the top of the seventh with a four-run showing; Percifield accounted for two of the plate-crossings by sending one over the left-center field wall for Coast Guard's second homer of the game. Mitchell scored once more in the bottom of the eighth thanks to another RBI single by Ficocelli, but Coast Guard erased the run in the top of the ninth after
Max Van Auken (Franklinville, N.J.) drew a bases-loaded walk.
Percifield went 3-for-5 on the day with a walk and a game-high five RBIs, while Cho had three RBIs on 2-for-6 hitting.
Kael Godshalk (Bangor, Pa.) and
Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) put together three-hit games, as well, with Godshalk drawing a walk and driving in a run. Stafford and
Blake George (Bethlehem, Pa.) had two hits apiece as Stafford drove in two RBIs and George drove in one.
The Bears used nine pitchers in the game.
Harrison Milbert (Kingston, Mass.) opened with a nine-pitch scoreless first inning before he was followed by freshman
John DiMarsico (Severna Park, Md.) in the second, who was eventually awarded the win.
Jack Gausselin (Long Beach, Ind.) pitched the third,
Jackson Dorsey (Newark, Del.) took over in the fourth,
Sean Rojas (San Antonio, Tex.) was fifth, and
Conor Watts (Mahopac, N.Y.) sixth. Closing out the final three innings was
Aidan Anderson (Waukesha, Wisc.),
Tyler Michalek (Haslet, Tex.), and
Sean Harmon (Bethesda, Md.), who pitched an inning each, respectively.
Ficocelli provided most of the offense for Mitchell, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while
Braiden Alaimo (Enfield, Conn.) was the starter for the Mariners and was tacked for the loss after giving up first run of the game; he went 2.1 innings.
Bears baseball heads into their next round of action on Saturday, March 8th, kicking off their spring break trip to the DMV against Catholic University (3-3).
