NEW LONDON, Conn. --

Coast Guard returned to racing this weekend in their only home race of the season, taking on #2 ranked Wesleyan University. 

In the Varsity 8 event, the Bears put together a strong race with significant improvements from the previous weekend. The crew was able to maintain contact with Wesleyan off the line, holding until just before the 1k mark, where Wesleyan moved ahead. Wesleyan held off any following moves from the Bears and would go on to cross the line 6.8 seconds ahead of Coast Guard.

Following in the 2V8, Coast Guard was unable to match the speed of a strong Wesleyan 2V crew. Losing them off the line, but maintaining their position for the first 750 meters, Coast Guard did their best to close the gap to Wesleyan. However, Wesleyan's move at the 1k secured the outcome of the race. Wesleyan crossed the line in a time of 6:44.9 with Coast Guard following in 7:11.2.

For the 3V8 race, Coast Guard was strong off the line and was able to pull ahead by a length, holding that lead through the first thousand meters of the race. Wesleyan was able to chip away at the lead coming into the halfway mark and Coast Guard was unable to maintain their advantage. Wesleyan continued their advance and would go on to finish 4.3 seconds ahead of the Bears, finishing in a time of 7:00.7.

In the final race of the day, the 4V8 took to the course in deteriorating conditions as the headwind increased. The young Bears crew put together a strong performance, hanging with Wesleyan going stroke for stroke through the first 1250 of the race. Following a small mechanical issue, Coast Guard dropped a length on the Wesleyan crew but would go on to hold that position through the finish line. Wesleyan finished the race with a time of 8:19.3 followed by Coast Guard at 8:23.6.
