Bears defeat Albertus Magnus in midweek slugfest

NEW LONDON, Conn –

In a game which had 26 combined hits, and 11 different pitchers, Coast Guard gutted their way to an 18-12 victory over the Albertus Magnus Falcons. For the Falcons, the loss drops them to 3-9 on the 2025 campaign, they will next host Mitchell College for a double-header on Saturday March 29th with game one first pitch set for 12:00 PM.

Coast Guard jumped ahead in the game right from the jump, scoring five runs in the first inning on a Wyatt Duthu(Madison, AL) two run single and Jack Steel(Medford Lakes, NJ) three run homer. Duthu scored Parker Madden(Ruston, LA) and Carson Cho(Haymarket, VA), both of whom reached on singles. Steel drove in Duthu and Rick Barkley(Seattle, WA) who reached base via walk.

Albertus scratched across two runs in the 2nd but CGA again took command in the 3rd with three runs to make the score 8-2. The runs were scored on RBI hits from Jack Steel and Drew Basque(Kealakekua, HI), both of whom had five RBI on the day. The middle innings would go scoreless for both squads but in the 7th, the game would be turned on its head.

In the 7th inning, the teams would each bat around, scoring a combined 15 runs. Albertus Magnus would get the hit parade started scoring six in the top of the frame to tie the score at 8-8 with the help of three walks and two errors from the Bears defense. In the bottom of the inning, Coast Guard made sure the game would not be tied for long. Jack Steel took the lead back at 9-8 with an RBI single to score Drew Basque, who hit a one out double to reach base. Steel would then score himself on a wild pitch. After a Carson Cho RBI walk scored Kael Godshalk(Bangor, PA), Tyler Michalek(Haslet, TX) would deliver a pinch hit RBI walk to score Ayden Gurevich(Lake Worth, FL) who too reached base via base on balls. The next batter Rick Barkley hit a sacrifice fly to score Cho before Drew Basque broke the game open with a bases clearing double in the gap. He would later score on an error to bring the score to 17-8. Reaching base on that error was Jack Steel, who would then steal second base for his second SB of the inning.

After a scoreless top of the 8th, CGA would have back to back pinch hitters lead off the inning and do their job with Luke Percifield(Pinellas Park, FL) singling and Ryan Lista(San Diego, CA) getting hit by pitch. Percifield would come around to score to give the Bears some insurance going into the 9th. In the 9th, the Falcons of Alberts Magnus refused to quit, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three runs but ultimately falling 18-11 with Bode Dykens entering in relief to make the final out. Earning the win for the Bears was Ryan Karman(Sayville, NY) with an inning in relief. Jack Gausselin(Long Beach, IN) was the only CGA pitcher to throw over 1.2 IP in the staff day with 3.1 innings of excellent ball. Gausselin allowed no runs and just one hit while striking out two and walking none in his appearance. Also with a scoreless appearance was Jackson Dorsey(Newark, DE) who threw a scoreless 8th, striking out one and allowing no baserunners.

At the dish, four different Bears had multiple hits. Basque and Steel, who had 10 combined RBI, each went 3/5 with three runs scored while lefties Nathan Stafford(Jupiter, FL) and Wyatt Duthu each with two hits. For Basque, all three of his hits were doubles, the only three CGA had on the afternoon. As a team, Coast Guard had nine walks, 14 hits, and struck out just twice.

The victory improves Coast Guard to 9-6 on the year. They will open up conference play this weekend with a Saturday doubleheader at home vs Clark, first pitch slated for 12:00 PM.
