CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Coast Guard women's lacrosse reopened their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule today with a 10-21 loss at MIT. Coast Guard's fourth straight loss puts them at 2-4 (0-2 NEWMAC), while MIT opened their conference schedule with a win to break a three-game losing streak and improve to 2-4 (0-1 NEWMAC). The Engineers will face another NEWMAC foe in the form of Clark University (3-5, 1-1 NEWMAC) on March 26th.
Despite the loss, goalkeeper and co-captain
Maici Mintchwarner (Sr. - Cream Ridge, N.J.) produced a valiant effort between the sticks by saving 16 shots throughout the contest. The career-high total for the senior leader also tied the program's single-game record, making Mintchwarner just the third player in Bears women's lacrosse history to reach the mark.
Angel Fay '18 set the mark during the inaugural 2015 season at Guilford College, and
Mary Budri '21 became the first to match it in 2019 at Roger Williams.
Coast Guard was able to remain in reach of their hosts despite trailing 4-9 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but a 6-1 run by MIT over the final nine minutes gave the Engineers a 15-5 lead at halftime. The Bears attempted a second half comeback by scored five and allowed one through the entire third quarter and the three minutes of the fourth; the Engineers thwarted it by putting five in the back of the net and shutting out their guests for the rest of the game.
The offensive difference was clear from the get-go, as MIT was able to take 25 shots with 18 being on goal in the first half while the Bears took nine with six on-target. The Engineers also held a 20-15 advantage in ground balls and 20-13 in draw controls. Coast Guard committed 19 turnovers while the hosts committed 12.
The Bears were led on the day by co-captain
Caitlyn Coates (Sr. - Hanover, Pa) and solid performance by
Kira Howard (Sr. - Wilton, Conn.); Coates accounted for a team-high six points on five goals and an assist while Howard had four points on a hat trick and an assist.
Abby McAllister (Jr. - Pleasantville, N.Y.) also netted a multi-point game with her two assists, while four more Coast Guard players tallied a point each.
Six difference Bears picked up two ground balls, with
Rileigh Leary (Fr. - Holden, Mass.) being on of them while adding two caused turnovers and two draw controls to her line. Fellow first-year
Ella Campbell (Fr. - Foxborough, Mass.) was the team leader in draw controls with three, while two other Bears had two draw controls each.
Coast Guard will look to turn their luck around on March 26th as they host Salve Regina (2-5, 1-1 NEWMAC) for more conference action. The Bears took a 15-5 win in last season's contest in Newport on the back of an eight-point game by McAllister, who built it with three goals and five assists. The Seahawks will look to bounce back from their 3-19 loss to Springfield earlier today.
