JWU (R.I.) Holds Bears Baseball to Three Hits in Non-Conference Contest

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  Coast Guard baseball hosted Johnson & Wales (R.I.) today in a non-conference row that saw the Bears held to three hits in a 1-9 loss. JWU went yard twice to fuel their offensive performance.

Coast Guard moves to 6-4, while the Wildcats improve to 5-8. They'll be back on the diamond tomorrow in a 3:30 PM game at Rhode Island College (6-4).

JWU lead-off man Jack Obert (Plymouth, Mass.) made an immediate impact by going yard in the first at-bat of the game. The Wildcats added a couple more on in the top of the third after cleanup hitter Trevor Juan (Bolton, Conn.) did his job by driving in two with a single to center field, making it a 3-0 game.

JWU extended their lead later on with a five-run seventh. Jeff Valdez Jimenez (Boston, Mass.) got it started with a two RBI single to center field before Juan added to his line with a three-run fence clearer over the left-center field wall.

JWU was carrying a combined no-hitter into the seventh inning before Bears catcher Parker Madden (Ruston, La.) broke it up with a one-run double to left-center. He'd cross the plate for Coast Guard's first run of the game after power-hitting shortstop Rick Barkley (Bellevue, Wash.) followed-suit with another double, this time to left field. The Wildcats were able to get the run back in the top of the ninth on a 4-6-3 double play with the bases loaded and no outs.

The Bears' final hit of the day came in the bottom of the ninth off the bat of freshman catcher Isaac Hobbs (Arlington, Va.), who earned his first collegiate hit with his line-drive single to right field. Coast Guard reached base two other times via walks from outfielder Carson Cho (Haymarket, Va.) and designated hitter Ayden Gurevich (Lake Worth, Fla.), while first baseman Nathan Stafford (Jupiter, Fla.) earned a pass to first after getting beaned.

Coast Guard used five pitchers in the effort with Harrison Milbert (Kingston, Mass.) making the start; he went a serviceable four innings while allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out two, while two of his three runs allowed were earned. The only Bear to shutout JWU was Aidan Andersen (Waukesha, Wisc.), who pitched the eighth and struck out two.

Coast Guard baseball will look to bounce back in tomorrow's road match-up at Western New England University (7-3). It will be the first Battle of the Bears since 2002, which the Golden variant won in a 4-3 result.
