Bears fall to MIT Engineers after slow start on the road

Cambridge, Mass. –

In a road game vs MIT with NEWMAC playoff implications, Coast Guard dropped the league battle to the Engineers 88-79. With the victory, MIT improves to 10-11(6-1 NEWMAC). The Engineers will next travel to Babson College, Wednesday February 12th at 7:30 PM. 

MIT jumped out to a 12-0 early lead and Coast Guard was unable to recover. In the 1st quarter, the Bears cut MIT's lead to as few as eight when Julia Mann(Central Square, NY) hit a layup with under a minute in the first. In the 2nd quarter, the Engineers again stepped on the gas early with a 5-0 run to start the quarter and the Bears went to the half trailing 45-31.

In the second half, the Bears offense came out firing. As a team in the 3rd quarter, CGA shot 78.6% from the field and 71.4% from three. They entered the 4th quarter down just eight points after a Dorothy Stotts(Edina, MN) three pointer on assist from Taylor Lynch(Madison, IN). In the fourth, MIT broke away and Coast Guard was unable to mount a comeback against the Engineers, ultimately falling 88-79.

The Bears leading scorer in the afternoon was Dorothy Stotts, who scored 26 points. For Stotts, it was her 11th 20+ point performance thus far in the season and moves her into 11th place in CGA women's basketball history in scoring. Stotts led the Bears in assists as well with six. Just behind Dottie in points was Julia Mann with 20. Mann led the Bears in rebounds with nine and went 9/10 at the free throw line. Senior center Glory Blethen(Boothbay, ME) scored 12 points and went 2-3 from beyond the arc while adding six rebounds. 

Coast Guard's next game will be home vs Clark, Wednesday February 12th at 6:00 PM. For the Bears, it will be their annual "Pink Game".
