Men’s Lacrosse drops season opener at SUNY Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. –

Despite a late comeback attempt with three goals in the final 1:45 of the game, Coast Guard dropped their opening day battle with SUNY Maritime. Maritime starts their 2025 campaign 1-0 with the victory. The Privateers will travel to SUNY New Paltz Wednesday at 3:00 PM.

Despite never leading, CGA kept the game within reach the entire game. It was the Privateer scoring runs that sealed the fate for the Bears. Maritime scored three unanswered goals in the 2nd quarter to bring the score from 5-4 to 8-4 and then scored four unanswered in the 3rd quarter after Coast Guard cut their deficit to just one.

Coast Guard was led on the field by sophomore attacker Eric Key(Clarksville, VA). He scored three goals including the Bears first and final goals in the afternoon. Key was tops on the team in assists as well with three for a team high six points. Key also added three ground balls.

Freshman attacker Ezekiel Christian(Stonington, CT) made the most of his first career collegiate game, scoring three goals. Fellow freshman Nolan Grizzle(Severna Park, MD) too found the back of the net in his first collegiate game with an unassisted goal in the 2nd quarter. Just behind Key for the team lead in assists was yet another freshman, midfielder Ryder Bonser(Spring Branch, TX) who had two. Bonser led the Bears in caused turnovers with two.

FOGO Mason Tucker(Alpharetta, GA) secured nine ground balls for the Bears to lead the team. Behind Tucker was senior Oliver Bolton(Darien, CT) with four.

As a team, Coast Guard dominated the face off(24-5), and had both more shots(59-30) and shots on goal(27-20) than the Privateers with the teams tied in turnovers(19-19) but were unable to capitalize.

The Bears home opener will be Wednesday February 19th at 6:00 PM when the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards come to town.
