BOSTON, Mass. –
In their fifth consecutive road game to start the season, Coast Guard dropped a heartbreaker at Suffolk by a score of 67-66. The Bears started off cold, getting outscored by the Rams 21-14 in both the first and second quarters to head into halftime trailing by 14.
In the third quarter, the Bears mounted a comeback on the back of their suffocating defense. In the third, CGA had three steals, a block, and out-rebounded Suffolk 11-9. The offense for CGA was awoken in the third as well, spearheaded by sophomore guard
Elliot Geer(Jay, OK). After being held scoreless in the first half, Geer went off in the third quarter, scoring 10 of Coast Guard's 17 points to help send the Bears into the fourth quarter trailing by just four.
The momentum from the third carried into the fourth for Coast Guard, who tied the score at 53-53 on an
Olivia Wright(Midlothian, VA) made three pointer with 7:10 remaining. That 53-53 tie was the first tie since 2-2 in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, CGA took their first lead since 2-0 when senior captain
Dorothy Stotts(Edina, MN) splashed a three pointer to go up 58-55. That lead jumped to five on a Wright made jump shot before Suffolk made a run of their own, scoring the next six points and taking the lead back on an
Allison Bono(Chester, NY) two.
A Geer layup from a perfect
Dorothy Stotts pass put CGA back up one. On the next Rams possession,
Olivia Wright forced a turnover and converted the fast break layup off her steal to put the Bears up three. As the game clock ticked down under a minute, the Bears and Rams exchanged buckets on their next three possessions to leave the Bears up one with the ball and 30 seconds remaining. A turnover gave Suffolk the ball with 20 seconds to go. After missing a layup with under 10 seconds left, Suffolk got their own rebound and a Coast Guard foul put the Rams on the line with just one second left on the clock.
Jordan Moreau(North Kingston, RI) sunk both to give Suffolk the lead, and ultimately the win.
The victory improves Suffolk to 5-0 to start the year. They will travel to Wheaton College on Saturday November 22nd at 3:00 PM. For Coast Guard, they will break for Thanksgiving before finally get to play on their home court on Wednesday December 3rd with a 7:30 game vs Wesleyan.
