NEW LONDON, Conn. --
For the third consecutive year, Coast Guard football took home the Mug from Norwich with a 59-28 romp of the Cadets. The loss drops Norwich to 1-6 on the season, 0-4 NEWMAC. Norwich will next face off with Springfield College at home, November 1st at noon.
For the Bears, this was their final home game of the season at Cadet Memorial Field in New London, and they closed it out with a bang. This year on CMF, they went 4-0 and scored an average of 52 points. Their final "home" game of the season will be played vs Merchant Marine at historic Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts three weeks from today.Â
On defense, Coast Guard was exceptional yet again.
Will Adair(San Antonio, TX) and
Noah Rohrer(Mt. Joy Township, PA) each recorded sacks, defensive backs
Jael Cuellar(Miami, FL) and
Ramon Cruz(Valparaiso, FL) led in tackles with eight and seven respectively. Sealing the game for the D was linebacker
Samuel Sauers(Harrisburg, PA) with a late interception.
As has become habit for the potent Coast Guard offense season, they rolled, putting up yet another crooked number with a whopping 59 points. Scoring three times for the Bears was junior powerhouse
Harrison Hensley(Riverview, FL). Hensley now has three such games in which he has scored three or more times. He is also currently number two in the nation in rushing scores with 14. On the day, Harry totaled 204 rushing yards. Also finding the endzone on the ground for CGA was senior backÂ
Glenn Patrick(Fairhope, AL) who fought back from injury to play today.
Accounting for three of the other Bears' scores were a trio of firsts. Freshman return specialist
Freddy Barber(Matoaca, VA) showed off his wheels with a 93 yard kick return touchdown, just four yards shy of the Coast Guard Academy record. It was the first of hopefully many scores in Barber's young career. Also netting his first career score wasÂ
Griffin Cheslock(Early, TX) who each scored in the fourth.
The other first was by senior left tackle
Jay Martin(Newton, NJ) who scored the first rushing touchdown of his exceptional career with a four yard sprint to the pylon in the second half. It was a well earned score for the All-Region big man who is one of the best tackles in the country.
Finding Martin for that score was sophomore QB
Sean Burns(Absecon, NJ). Burns had 176 yards and two passing TDs while also adding 18 yards on the ground.Â
Despite a kick return TD and reception TD from our left tackle, it was wideout
Amr Baadani(Fairfax, VA) who had the most interesting score of the day. After a fumble inside of the Norwich five yard line, Baadani was in the right spot, right time for the Bears when he scooped the ball right in the endzone for a Bears score.
Next week the Bears will go on the road at noon for a key NEWMAC matchup vs the Seahawks of Salve Regina.
