NEW LONDON, Conn. —
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy women's soccer team were defeated by Emerson College, 1-3, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday.
Ella Pottle (Epping, N.H.) scored the lone goal for Coast Guard in the defeat, while
Julia Little (Pensacola, Fla.) made five saves.
The Bears move to 1-10-2 on the season and 0-5-0 in conference play following their sixth straight loss, while Emerson improves 5-3-4 overall and 3-0-2 in the NEWMAC. The Lions will look to extend their unbeaten streak to four in a row when they host Smith College for further conference play on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Coast Guard found themselves in an immediate hole after Kelsey Yoshikawa found the back of the net in the second minute, but that lead lasted 24 minutes. The play was set up by
Bianca McIntosh (Woodbridge, Va.) who got the ball from a Bears throw-in and took it into the corner to protect it from an Emerson defender. With a nudge and a tap, the freshman was able to make some space to send a cross into the box, where Pottle met it with a touch of the right foot to get it past Lion's keeper
Hailey Forman for the equalizer.
The Lions took the lead back just before halftime on a solo goal in the 43rd minute by
Abby Cockerill, and they added some insurance in the second half after a score
Brady Campbell in the 74th. Coast Guard was not without opportunities, out-trying Emerson by a 14-12 margin, though the Lions held an 8-6 lead in shots on goal.
McIntosh took a team-high five shots, with her best of the afternoon resulting in a pivotal save by Forman in the 59th minute. With Coast Guard on the attack, the freshman sent an arching chip into the box that seemed like it was going to sneak into the net under the crossbar and out of the reach of the Lions' goalie, but Foreman was able to punch the ball back out of the box with a great extension while jumping back. Forman matched Little with five saves.
Bears women's soccer will have another chance to get off the schneid when they travel to South Hadley on Wednesday to face Mount Holyoke College at 7 p.m. Coast Guard has enjoyed historical success against the Lyons to the tune of a 15-8-1 record dating back to 2000, with that lone tie coming in last season's scoreless draw at Nitchman.
