Bears Overpower Albright, 82-61, in Tenth Straight Win

NEW LONDON, Conn.  -  The Coast Guard Academy women's basketball team outplayed the Albright College Lions this afternoon, 82-61. Good shooting on the part of Coast Guard was the defining factor, with the Bears going 34-80 (42.5%) from the field and an excellent 12-21 (57.1%) on three-pointers.

Coast Guard picks up its tenth straight win to improve to 11-1, while Albright moves to 6-4. The Lions will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, January 8th, at no. 25/22 Messiah University. The 9-2 Falcons will be hosting the MAC Commonwealth schedule opener for both teams.

A slow start had the Bears down 14-19 at the end of the first quarter, but they'd head into halftime on top by outscoring their opponents, 27-14, in the second. Coast Guard was able to turn it around by shooting 11-23 (47.8%) from the field and going 5-10 (50.0%) on threes. Four of those long-range shots were hit by junior guard Dorothy Stotts (Edina, Minn.).

Coast Guard kept applying the pressure after the break, limiting Albright to seven points on 3-13 (23.1%) shooting in the third quarter to head into the final ten minutes with a 58-40 lead. The Lions would wake up again in the fourth by scoring 21 points, but the Bears would prevent any chance of a comeback by scoring 24 on their end to keep in step with the visitors.

Stotts finished with a game-high 24 points (9-22 FG, 6-10 3PT), seven rebounds, and two steals. Her six three-pointers moved her into the top ten in program history for made threes with 127, passing 2020 graduate Zoe Riis-Fallica's mark of 126.

Behind Stotts was senior forward Glory Blethen (Boothbay, Maine) with 11 points (5-9 FG, 1-1 3PT) while the rest of the senior core in Julia Mann (Central Square, N.Y.) and Kelly Hagerty (Emerald Isle, N.C.) scored ten each. Mann grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and Hagerty pulled down seven boards to go with two blocks. Junior guard Taylor Lynch (Madison, Ind.) had an unselfish ten assists, a career-high for the Hoosier.

Albright's lone player in double-digits was senior guard and team leading-scorer Mackenzie Dover (West Orange N.J.), whose 20 points (10-23 FG, 0-4 3PT) on mostly impressive finished at the rim went with three steals. Junior center Orianna Edmond (Lancaster, Pa.) was the game's leader in rebounding with nine boards, six of which were on the offensive end.

The Bears will be on the road for their next three contests, the first of which takes them to Kings Point on Tuesday, January 7th, for their annual face-off against Merchant Marine. Coast Guard is 16-7 all-time against the Mariners, and they'll look to make it two-straight after taking last year's game, 78-56. Stotts dropped 24 points (9-19 FG, 3-10 3PT) in that one, while Mann had an efficient 14 (4-6 FG, 3-5 3PT).
