BOSTON, Mass. - The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team kicked off the second half of their NEWMAC schedule tonight, taking a 63-105 loss at Emerson College. Emerson was out for revenge in this one, having lost the 65-74 first meeting between the teams earlier this season.
Coast Guard moves to 7-11 (3-6 NEWMAC), extending their losing streak to four games; Emerson improves to 8-11 (3-7 NEWMAC) and breaks a four-game losing streak. The Lions will look to keep it going in their next game on Wednesday, February 5th, for which they'll be on the road at no. 18 WPI (17-2, 9-1 NEWMAC).
It was tough goings in the first half for the Bears, who faced a 26-60 deficit by the halftime buzzer. Coast Guard had no luck on either side of the ball, shooting 9-27 (33.3%) while Emerson shot 26-36 (72.2%). The Bears were also makeless on six three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes, while the hosts were 7-11 (63.6%) and held a 21-9 advantage in rebounding. Freshman guard
Colin Huang (Irvine, Calif.) had six points to lead Coast Guard at the break, while seven-footer
Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) led the game with 14.
The second half was more even in scoring, but Coast Guard was still outscored by a 37-45 margin. The Bears shot 11-28 (39.3%) and made a trio of three-pointers, while Emerson came down from their first half performance and shot 17-37 (45.9%). In total rebounds, Coast Guard lost a 24-44 battle. Luke Farrell (Ortley Beach, N.J.) and
Adryan Herron (St. Leonard, Md.) had ten each to lead Coast Guard; Helmhold finished with a game-high 22 points.
The Bears will look ahead to this Saturday, February 1st, to get back on track at home against WPI. The Engineers won the first match-up of the season, 73-60.
