Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Falls to DeSales 3-1

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Coast Guard women's soccer was looking to start their weekend trip to Pennsylvania with a win. The Bears visited DeSales University for the first of two games in as many days in the Keystone State, but were beaten by their hosts 3-1 in a hard-fought match.

The win marked the Bulldogs' first victory of the season after going into the game with an 0-3 record. DeSales will suit up again on September 10th and face Muhlenberg College for a 4:30 PM start time.

DeSales took the lead early on with a goal in the 6th minute, and then extended the margin to 2-0 a little over 30 seconds later. Coast Guard had an opportunity to lessen the gap after the Bulldogs were whistled for a foul inside their own penalty area during the 23rd minute. Senior midfielder Sydney Park (Severna Park, Md.) lined up her shot and whizzed it past DeSales' goalie to make it a 2-1.

Both teams were unable to score during the remaining minutes of the first half. The Bulldogs shook off their rust just a couple of minutes into the last 45 minutes, getting some insurance to go up 3-1 in the 48th minute. The Bears were unable to mount a comeback and fell to 0-0-2 on the season.

Coast Guard faced a great defensive performance by the Bulldogs, who allowed only four shots during the match with two being on-goal. Senior goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.) spent the entire game between the woodwork for the Bears and made 5 saves. Three yellow cards were awarded during the game, all within a 10 minute span; Coast Guard was given two in the 61st and 70th minutes, while DeSales was administered one in the 65th minute.

Women's soccer will not have much time for rest as they face their next opponent on Sunday afternoon. They'll be heading to Bethlehem, Pa. to close out their road trip against Moravian University, who are off to a 3-0-0 start after recently beating Muhlenberg 3-0 on Friday.
