NEW LONDON, Conn. - This afternoon, Coast Guard Men's Soccer fell to Wheaton College by a score of 5-0, after a second half offensive explosion from the Lyons.
With this loss, the Bears record now sits at 7-1-1 while the Lyons move to 5-3-2. Up next for Wheaton is a trip to Norton, MA where they will take on Salem State University, this coming Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
The first half showcased a strong defensive effort from both sides, with junior goalie
John Putnam making two crucial saves to keep the Lyons off the board. With that being said, the first half ended tied 0-0.
The defense for the Bears was not quite as effective in the second half, allowing their first goal in the 59th minute. This allowed Lyons' offense to catch fire, scoring two more goals in the next 13 minutes to increase their lead to 3-0.
Now trailing 3-0, the Bears were forced to push up on offense, resulting in two back-back goals for the Lyons in the 87th and 88th minutes. As the final buzzer sounded the score read 5-0 in favor of Wheaton resulting in the Bears first loss of the season.
After three consecutive away games, the Bears finally return home this coming Tuesday when they will look to bounce back against Western New England. Kick-off will be at 6:00 p.m. on Nitchman Field.
