Bears start off NEWMAC play with victory over Clark

NEW LONDON, Conn. –

Much like Wednesday vs Wentworth, the Bears came out firing. They had two shots five minutes into the game and broke through at the 6:50 mark on a goal from Tara Jessen(Signal Mountain, TN). Jessen was assisted on a perfect pass from Mia Forti(Madison, CT). Forti found Jessen wide open with an open goal for her second goal in as many games.

Just prior to Jessen scoring, Clark seemed to have a prime scoring opportunity with a two on one breakaway but senior defender Grace Flynn(Saverna Park, MD), thanks to her elite speed, was able to make the defensive stop.

The Bears had one other prime scoring opportunity when Jessen found teammate Kelsey Ward(Fort Lauderdale, FL) but excellent play from Clark's defenders halted the opportunity. Later in the half, it was Clark with the scoring chances but they never broke through. The highlight of the half for CGA's defense was a diving save for Emily Scharnitzky(Charleston, SC) at the 16:47 mark. The senior goalkeeper stopped all four of the Cougar's shots on goal in the half.

Early in the 2nd, CGA looked poised to score again but a shot by Riley Vicinanzo(Vestavia Hills, AL) went just wide to the right. Over the next 10 minutes, Coast Guard rattled off five more shots but Clark's goalie Anabella White saved two, and three went just off target to keep the score at 1-0.

With just under six minutes to go, Arwen Wise(Weatherford, TX) put a free kick on goal which appeared to be heading for the back of the net but Clark goalkeeper Anabella White made a miraculous one handed, diving save to keep the Bears lead at just 1-0.

With stellar defensive play for the final five minutes, led by senior captain Grace Flynn, the Bears were able to cling to a 1-0 victory.

The loss for Clark drops them to 3-4 on the season, 0-1 in NEWMAC play. The Clark Cougars will next go on the road to face cross-town rival Worcester State on Wednesday September 25th at 7:00 PM.

With the victory, their first of the season, Coast Guard improves to 1-5-1(1-0 NEWMAC). They get five days off until they host the Babson Beavers this Friday September 27th at 6:00 PM.
