WORCESTER, Mass. - Softball traveled to WPI for the Play-In game of the NEWMAC Postseason Tournament, with the comeback falling short, 8-6.
Coast Guard jumped out ahead first in the top of the opening inning. With a runner on,
Julia Breidenthal hit an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later,
Lillia Farlow hit a single of her own to bring in Breidenthal and put the Bears up, 2-0.
WPI plated five in the home half of the second and added another in the bottom of the third, CGA now trailing, 6-2, heading into the fourth.
The Bears got one back in the top half off an RBI single by
Natalie Beck that brought CGA within three.
However, the Engineers got two across in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 8-3.
Coast Guard made some noise in the top of the seventh. Breidenthal,
Isabelle Shroyer and Farlow led off the frame with singles, before an RBI walk from
Emma Behel made it 8-4.
Madison Long then reached on a fielder's choice to score another run and cut the lead to back three. An RBI ground-out from Carey made it a two-run game at 8-6.
CGA was unable to complete the comeback, dropping the game, 8-6 and ending their season.
Breidenthal led the Bears at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI, while Farlow had two hits and an RBI.
Dana Walker had three strikeouts in the circle, while Behel had three of her own.
Coast Guard ends the season with an overall record of 13-22 and a conference record of 11-10.
