Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. - Softball hosted Smith in their final regular season games, dropping both games of the day to the Pioneers.
Game one, the Bears struggled to get their bats going as their fell with a final of 4-1.
Smith struck early off an early homer that put Coast Guard down 1-0 in the first. CGA had its first opportunity in the bottom of the second with two on, but couldn't capitalize.Â
The Pioneers added on in the top of the fifth with three runs. The Bears got their lone run in the home half of the inning off a single by
Natalie Beck that scored
Bridget Bartz.Â
Coast Guard kept Smith from scoring again through the next two innings, but was unable to make a comeback, dropping game one.
Game two, the Bears had the lead first, but ultimately dropped the second game, 4-3.
Both teams were quiet through the first two and a half before CGA put up the first run.
Christine Carey made contact, plus an error by Smith's second baseman, brought
Julia Breidenthal home for a 1-0 Bears lead.
Despite jumping out in front, Smith took the lead in the top of the fifth off of two Coast Guard mistakes. Heading into the sixth, the Bears were down, 2-1.Â
Smith added on in the top of the seventh, Coast Guard now down, 4-1.
The Bears attempted a rally in the home half of the seventh.
Veronica Krystofik hit a single to get on base with one out, followed by a double by
Madison Long to get two runners on. Breidenthal then was awarded a walk to load the bases. Beck reached on an error and brought in a run to get within two.
Isabelle Shroyer then got on base and brought in another run, making the score 4-3.Â
Even with the rally, CGA came up short.
Dana Walker recorded three strikeouts in the circle for the Bears.
Coast Guard will go on to compete in the NEWMAC Tournament, time, date and opponent TBA.
