Box Score 2 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Softball was on the road taking MIT, who is currently ranked second in the NEWMAC, splitting the day with the Engineers. The Bears dropped game one, but upset their opponent in game two.
Game one was tough for CGA, falling with a final score of 9-1.Â
MIT opened up by scoring all nine of their runs in the bottom of the first. From their Coast Guard kept them from scoring the rest of the game.Â
CGA's lone run of the game came in the top of the first.
Christine Carey singled to get herself on base and later came home off a triple by
Lillia Farlow. The Bears couldn't make anything else happen to stay alive, ending the game, 9-1, in five innings.
Game two was a completely different story as the Bears bounced back to upset the Engineers with a final score of 8-1.
Neither team scored through the first two innings before Coast Guard put up four in the top of the third.Â
After a walk awarded to
Elyssia Reyna, a single by Veronica Kyrstofik and another walk for
Abriana Schmutz, Natlie Beck was up to bat. Beck was patient at the plate and also earned a walk, bringing in the first run. Still with the bases loaded Carey hit a sacrifice fly out to centerfield, doubling the lead. Now up 2-0, Schmutz scored off a wild pitch, followed by a single from
Isabelle Shroyer that brought home the fourth run.
The Bears continued to hold off the Engineers while adding four more runs in the top of the sixth.
With a runner on, Farlow singled to bring home the fifth run. Later in the inning, much like the first run that came across, Beck walked with the bases loaded to add the fifth run for CGA. Still with the bases loaded,
Gracie Hare scored off a wild pitch, putting the Bears up, 7-0. Schmutz then came home off another error by MIT.
CGA shutout MIT through the first five and a half innings until the Engineers got their only run in the bottom of the sixth.
From their, the Bears kept them at one, taking the 8-1 victory.
Beck went 1-1 with two RBIs at the plate and
Dana Walker recorded five strikeouts for CGA.
Coast Guard is now 13-19 overall and 11-7 in conference. Their final regular season games will be hosting Smith at 12 PM & 2 PM on April 4th.Â
