Box Score 2 NEW LONDON, Conn. - Softball hosted Wheaton in a pair of makeup games from last week, splitting the day with the Lyons by taking game one and dropping the second.
Game one, the Bears took the close battle with a final of 5-3.
CGA struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning off a single by
Bridget Bartz that drove in
Julia Breidenthal.
Wheaton answered back in the top of the third, before Coast Guard retook the lead in the home half of the inning. A walk awarded to
Christine Carey and two consecutive singles by
Isabelle Shroyer and
Lillia Farlow loaded the bases for the Bears. Breidenthal stepped up to the plate and knocked a two-RBI single to give CGA the 3-1 lead.
The Lyons tied it up again in the top of the fourth, but the Bears responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. With Breidenthal at third,
Veronica Krystofik .singled to bring her home for the fourth run. Two batters later with two on,
Abriana Schmutz hit a single of her own to bring in Krystofik.
Into the top of the seventh, Coast Guard shut down Wheaton for the 5-3 victory.
Breidenthal went 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs, while Schmutz went 2-4 with one RBI. Shroyer had four strikeouts and was credited with the win, while
Dana Walker came in for the save and had three strikeouts.
Game two, Coast Guard couldn't top Wheaton, dropping it with a final of 4-3.
Coast Guard found itself down early on as Wheaton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and added another in the top of the third.
However, the Bears rallied in the home half of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. With two runners on, Farlow doubled to tie the game at two. She was followed up by a single by Bartz for the 3-2 lead.
Top of the seventh, the Lyons added two to take the lead, 4-3.
The Bears weren't able to get any runs in the bottom half, dropping the game, 4-3.
Coast Guard will next host U Mass Dartmouth on April 24th at 3 PM & 5 PM
