Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Flo. - Bears Softball dropped both games on their third day of competition in Florida, losing to Bowdoin in the morning, and dropping the evening game to Farmingdale State.
The first game of the day didn't go in favor of Coast Guard, falling to Bowdoin with a final of 7-0.
CGA's best opportunity game in top of the third. They were able to load the bases after
Elyssia Reyna was awarded a walk, and
Abriana Schmutz and
Christine Carey each singled. Despite the opportunity, Coast Guard couldn't get a run across.
The Bears were able to hold off their opponent until, the bottom of the fourth, only allowing one run. Offensively, Cost Guard couldn't get the bats going, while Bowdoin continued to score on the other side. Ultimately, CGA fell, 7-0.
Dana Walker recorded six strikeouts in the circle for the Bears.
In game two, Coast Guard came back to force extra innings, but ultimately fell, 4-3 in eight.
Game two started out strong for the Bears, with an opening inning that saw
Madison Long catching a runner stealing second for the first out.
Despite the hot start, the Bears found themselves down, 3-0 after three and a half.
Into the bottom of the second, bases loaded for CGA, they got one back after walking one in, cutting the lead to 3-1. Farmingdale State was threatening in the top of the fifth, but with two outs, Carey launched one from center to get an out at home.
Into the home half of the sixth inning, back-to-back hits by Carey and
Isabelle Shroyer quickly put runners on first and second for the Bears. After contact by
Lillia Farlow, Carey was threatening at third. Strong contact by
Bridget Bartz wasn't enough to get down and the Bears came away with nothing.
With a final attempt in the bottom of the seventh, Walker led off with a single shot to center.
Natalie Beck next got on base with a fielder's choice and advanced to second after a passed ball.
Julia Breidenthal forced a walk to get another runner on base for the Bears. With two outs and two on, Carey singled up the middle to scored Beck. Shroyer was up next, with a hit of her own to bring home Breidenthal, tying it up at three and forcing an eighth inning.
The Rams put one up on the top of the eighth to go up 4-3. The Bears had runners on in the home half, but were unable to answer.
Shroyer recorded four strikeouts in the circle for CGA.
Coast Guard will next play The College of Wooster at 9:15 AM and Swarthmore College at 11:15 AM on March 14th on their final day in Florida.
