Coast Guard Academy women's basketball lost a heartbreaker in the NEWMAC quarterfinals to Babson. The Bears conclude their incredible season at 19-7. The 5th seeded Babson Beavers advance to the semifinals to face top seeded Springfield Friday February 23rd at 7:00 PM.
Coast Guard led early, with a 16-11 lead after the 1st quarter but the game was a back and forth battle for four quarters. The score was tied at 26-26 at the half and 41-41 after three quarters. Babson guard Emily Flynn tied the score at 41 on a last second shot with time expiring. In the 4th, the Beavers came out on fire, taking a 43-41 lead that they would not relinquish.Â
The Bears were led by junior forward
Kelly Hagerty, who tied for the team lead in points with 12, and led the team with 10 rebounds. Hagerty tied in most points with senior guard and team captain
Kira Wood. Wood will graduate as one of only 11 players in program history to reach 1,000 points. Junior forward
Glory Blethen had a team high four assists and four blocked shots. Junior
Julia Mann scored seven points with a team leading three steals in a gritty effort.
Coast Guard Academy will graduate three seniors,
Julia Barbalato,
Natasha Lange, and
Kira Wood. All three seniors have greatly contributed to the program on and off the court.
