Football Struggles Against WPI's Strong Offense in 38-14 Loss

NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a lopsided contest highlighted by a dominant offensive performance from WPI, the Engineers surged ahead with 24 first-half points, leaving the Bears in a tough spot. Despite their efforts to rally, the Bears struggled to keep pace and couldn't capitalize on their opportunities, ultimately falling 38-14.

The first quarter was marked by a back-and-forth battle, with the Engineers taking an early 3-0 lead on their opening drive. The Bears quickly responded with a 14-play, 75-yard march that ended in a 4-yard touchdown rush, briefly giving them a 7-3 lead. However, WPI answered back on their next possession, scoring a touchdown and ending the quarter with the Bears trailing 10-7.

The second quarter saw the Engineers' offense take control, adding two passing touchdowns to their score. The second of the two touchdowns came after a turnover on downs by the Bears, when senior quarterback Dennis O'Shea fell just a yard short of converting a crucial fourth down. Consequently, the Bears went into halftime down 24-7.

WPI came out strong in the third quarter, returning the opening kickoff to the Coast Guard 40-yard line, and quickly followed up with a 36-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 31-7.

Later in the third quarter, the Bears managed to mount a long drive that culminated in a 6-yard touchdown run from senior quarterback Joey Armentrout. However, they still faced a 17-point deficit heading into the final quarter.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the fourth quarter brought little opportunity for a comeback, as WPI added their fifth passing touchdown of the game, pushing the score to 38-14. This would be the game's final score, leaving the Bears with a 4-4 record on the season.

Looking ahead, the Bears will return home next Saturday to face SUNY Maritime, where they will hope to get back above .500. Like this week, the game is set to kick off at noon.
